The applications are closed for the Hélio and Amélia Pedroso/Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) Chair in Portuguese Studies, from the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for the Fall semester of 2021.

This chair aims to support the development of the interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate programs in Portuguese Studies at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, as well as the research and publication objectives of the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture of this university.

Applications are open until March 15th for researchers, teachers and authors specializing in any area of Humanities and Social Sciences within the vast and diverse Portuguese-speaking world.

This year, UMass Dartmouth seeks doctoral researchers in Political Science, with expertise in Social Movements, in the Portuguese-speaking world, for a collaboration with the department of Political Science.

The selected candidate will teach a graduate course during the Fall semester of 2021 (September to December), and will also deliver one or more public lectures in her or his area of expertise, as well as contribute to the agenda and publications of the research center.

The financial support provided for this 16-week program is $50,000 USD (before taxes).

Requirements

  • PhD in Political Science, with specialization in Social Movements.
  • Record of research and publications in the areas of Humanities and Social Sciences relative to the Portuguese-speaking societies.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a course (graduate level) in the field of Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies, with a focus on Social Movements.

Preference

  • Record of event organization and/or editorial activity in the candidate’s field.

The Hélio and Amélia Pedroso/Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) Chair was created through the contributions of Luís Pedroso, Maria Dulce Alves Furman, Anthony Andrade, Frank B. Sousa, Manuel Neto and of FLAD.

This support allows the funding of residencies at UMass Dartmouth for major researchers specializing in Portuguese studies, in the area of Humanities.

The chair allows the career development of these researchers, and students to have contact with a group of top academics in a region of the United States with great influence from Portuguese culture, and where the Portuguese-American community has strong and established roots.
