FLAD opens competition for Visiting Professor at Georgetown University

FLAD and the Department of Government at Georgetown University, in Washington, D.C., announce the opening of the competition for Visiting Professor in the area of Political Science and International Relations for the academic year 2027/2028. The competition is intended for the selection of one or more teachers to teach at that university for one or two semesters, favoring applications with availability for the entire academic year.

The initiative seeks to strengthen the presence of Portuguese academics in one of the most prestigious North American universities and to promote scientific and academic exchange between Portugal and the United States. In addition to the teaching activity, the Visiting Professor is expected to actively participate in the academic life of the Department, develop initiatives in conjunction with FLAD and establish contacts with think tanks, foundations, universities and other institutions in the Washington, D.C. region.

Portuguese citizens or residents in Portugal with a completed PhD, affiliation to a Portuguese higher education institution and/or a research unit recognized by FCT, work published in their area of specialization and teaching experience in English may apply. Applications must demonstrate teaching experience and include a proposal for a curricular unit (syllabus) to be taught at Georgetown University.

Applications take place between August 1st and November 1st, 2026 and must be submitted here. The results will be communicated by December 15, 2026.

FLAD will award the selected Visiting Professor a scholarship in the amount of 5,000 euros per month, plus support of 500 euros for insurance and 1,000 euros for travel expenses. Georgetown University will complement this support with additional funding of $7,000, as well as a work office and support for participation in professional development activities, as provided by the institution.
