FLAD opens competition for Visiting Professor at Brown University

FLAD and the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island, announce the opening of the competition for Visiting Professor for the academic year 2027/2028. The initiative is intended to select two Portuguese professors or residents in Portugal, one for each academic semester, to teach at that North American university.

The competition aims to promote the teaching, in English, of a semester curricular unit in the areas of Humanities and Social Sciences (e.g. Literature, Art History, Sociology or Anthropology), focused on contemporary Portugal, and may include an approach to Portuguese-speaking societies and/or an international comparative dimension. The final theme of the course will be defined in articulation between the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies of Brown University and the selected professor.

In addition to the teaching activity, Visiting Professors are expected to accompany and collaborate in the initiatives developed by FLAD at Brown University and strengthen connections with other higher education institutions and partners in the New England region.

Portuguese citizens or residents in Portugal with a completed PhD, affiliation with a Portuguese higher education institution and/or a research unit recognized by FCT and experience of teaching in English in higher education can apply.

Applications take place between August 1st and November 1st, 2026 and must be submitted here. The results will be communicated by December 15, 2026.

FLAD will award each selected Visiting Professor a scholarship in the amount of 5,000 euros per month, plus support of 500 euros for insurance and 1,000 euros for travel expenses.
