On this World Portuguese Language Day, FLAD launches the second open call for the translation of literary works with the aim of helping Portuguese authors and publishing companies enter the North-American market, but also to finance the promotion of books by American authors that without this support would not arrive in Portugal.

In order to promote cooperation and cultural exchange between Portugal and the USA, this regular open call by FLAD supports the translation of literary works from Portuguese to English and from English to Portuguese. Applications will be open until next May 31st.

Candidates

  • Portuguese publishing companies may submit to the open call multiple books that are not published in Portugal, provided that the original English version is already published in the United States.
  • Portuguese and American authors or publishing companies may also submit several applications for books that are not published in the United States, being an essential requirement that the original version be published in Portuguese.

The financial support given by FLAD will be intended to bear the translating costs of the candidate books and will focus on literary works of any era and/or literary genre that are considered of interest to the knowledge and promotion of Portuguese language and culture in the USA, and vice-versa.

Open Call

In 2021, the open call will have two annual editions. The first will run from May 1st-31st and the second from October 1st-31st. Applications must be sent to FLAD by email to fladport@flad.pt, by 11:59 PM (continental Portugal time) on the last day of the month of the respective open call.

FLAD’s decision will be announced by the last day of the month following the closing of each edition of the open call.

Applications must be accompanied by:

  • Specific form (PT-USA – English and/or Portuguese – and EUA-PT);
  • 1 copy of the book (on paper or pdf);
  • Justification of the request for financial support;
  • CV of the translator;

We advise you to read the open call notice (PT-USA – English and/or Portuguese – and EUA-PT), where you can find all the details about the application.

Jury

The applications submitted will be analyzed and selected by FLAD, taking into account the relevance of the literary work and the feasibility of its publication. FLAD reserves the right to select one or more applications, as well as not to select any application if it concludes that none meets the requirements of quality, relevance, or other specifications. The final decision, of which there will be no appeal, will be communicated by FLAD, via e-mail, to all candidates.

Applications must be submitted by May 31st to: fladport@flad.pt

Thank you and see you soon!
