FLAD and Fulbright have been supporting research and study opportunities in the USA for more than 30 years and promoting Portugal as an academic destination for North-Americans.

Over the years the FLAD-Fulbright partnership has been developing joint programs that have already benefited dozens of participants.

Whether Portuguese who will do their master’s degree, PhD, or research in the USA, or for North-Americans who come to Portugal. – says Otília Reis, Executive Diretor of Fulbright Portugal.

The relationship began in 1987, the date of the first Fulbright-FLAD grant for Portuguese doctoral candidates to study and investigate in the USA, a program that lasted until 2012. Since then, numerous other Fulbright-FLAD grants have been launched, such as:

  • Grants for U.S. students and researchers to join Portuguese institutions (2012 – 2017)
  • Fulbright Brainstorm 2012: Childhood Obesity – the 21st-century epidemic (2012)
  • Grants for Portuguese School Principals – Educational Seminars frequency (2012-2013)
  • FLAD-Fulbright Public Health Grant (2013-2014)
  • FLAD-Fulbright Grant for Research in the USA – Opportunity Grants Program (2015-2016)

Essential to ensure greater visibility and impact of the grants and programs from both organizations, the FLAD-Fulbright partnership emerges enhanced in 2020 with more opportunities for students and researchers:

This partnership is one we are most proud of because it allows us to develop Portugal, gather efforts and strengthen the cultural, academic and scientific cooperation between students, researchers, teachers, research centers and educational institutions at the forefront of science on both sides of the Atlantic.
