“Amália in America – Beyond Fado” in a world premiere at the mythical Carnegie Hall, in New York, on October 11, to celebrate FLAD’s 40th anniversary.
“Amália in America – Beyond Fado” will make its world premiere at the prestigious Carnegie Hall, in New York, on October 11, a tribute to the life and work of Amália Rodrigues, with the voice of soloists Cristina Branco, Raquel Tavares and Ricardo Ribeiro and the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, which, under the direction of Jan Wierzba, will perform for the first time in the United States of America.
The tribute to the queen of fado will take place in one of the most famous North American concert halls, in an initiative of Égide – Portuguese Association of the Arts, which will mark the end of the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), in partnership also with OPART/Teatro Nacional de São Carlos.
More than a hundred artists will be on stage: 83 orchestral musicians, three soloists and a conductor, in a very special tribute to Amália Rodrigues.
The program features new orchestrations and adaptations of themes that marked Amália’s international career, from the songs of the Portuguese popular songbook to the Broadway songs she recorded in the United States. This selection pays tribute to her versatility and unique ability to cross different musical universes, now revisited by five composers and orchestrators of excellence: Carlos Azevedo, Daniel Bernardes, Filipe Raposo, Pedro Duarte and Pedro Moreira.
During her career, Amália Rodrigues performed at Carnegie Hall in 1952 and again in 1975, conquering the American public with her musical versatility. In 1966, she performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, among other shows, all of which were marked by sold-out venues and a sweeping success.
Tickets are now available and can be purchased at: https://www.carnegiehall.org/calendar/2025/10/11/amalia-in-america–beyond-fado-0800pm
“Amália in America – Beyond Fado” has the high patronage of the President of the Republic, and the support of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism of Portugal, TAP and the Amália Rodrigues Foundation.
