FLAD, the Portuguese Atlantic Commission and the Portuguese Atlantic Youth Association mark NATO’s 75th anniversary with the NATO at 75: Challenges Ahead conference, a debate on the challenges facing the Atlantic Alliance.

In the year in which it celebrates its 75th anniversary, NATO is facing a scenario that was unthinkable a few years ago: a war on European territory, two new members that until now had maintained neutrality and threats to its existence by presidential candidates of its largest and most influential member, the United States.

Gone is the year 2019 when Emmanuel Macron declared the brain death of the organization. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a war on European territory, has succeeded in uniting and motivating its members to proactively participate in defending against the Russian threat. But since then, the support has been losing strength and some divisions have reappeared.

In this context, FLAD, in partnership with the Portuguese Atlantic Commission (CPA) and the Portuguese Atlantic Youth Association (AJPA/YATA Portugal), organize the conference NATO at 75: Challenges Ahead, with the aim of promoting the debate in Portugal on these three quarters of a century of NATO and the present and future challenges facing the Alliance.

The debate will feature the intervention of General José Nunes da Fonseca, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, and a panel composed of Major General Nuno Lemos Pires, Director-General of National Defence Policy, and Professor Ana Santos Pinto, Professor at NOVA University Lisbon and head of NATO’s expert group for the review of the Alliance’s strategy for the southern flank.

This session will take place on April 22, starting at 6:00 p.m., in the FLAD auditorium, in Lisbon.

Admission is free, subject to registration. If you want to watch, just register here.
