Nathan Thrall on writting tragedy to better portray Palestinian daily life

To try to portray the difficulties and obstacles that Palestinians face in their daily lives, Nathan Thrall resorted to a real tragedy, one of a father who loses a son on his way to a field trip. This tragedy resulted in one of the books of the year, at a time when being a critic of Israel is rare and difficult, more so being Jewish and living in Israeli territory.

Nathan Thrall was at FLAD for a conversation about his latest book – ‘A Day in the Life of Abed Salama’ -, the tragedy that is the life of Palestinians on a day-to-day basis, and the result of the Hamas attacks on October 6, and the consequent Israeli offensive. Nathan Thrall contributes to The New York Times Magazine, The New York Review of Books and the London Review of Books, and for a decade directed the Arab-Israeli Project of the International Crisis Group, an independent organization dedicated to conflict prevention.
