Francisco Resendes, Director of the Portuguese Times newspaper in New Bedford, Massachusetts, tells us how the Portuguese-American community has adapted to the COVID-19 impacts.

There are several impacts felt by the community, from the loss of loved ones, to the closure of many Portuguese establishments and associations, and the cancellation of various Portugality manifestations, such as the Espírito Santo Festivities and the Day of Portugal. But the pandemic also demonstrated the charitable, solidary, and fraternal spirit of the Portuguese-American community of New England, as highlighted by Francisco Resendes.

Several Portuguese-Americans have organized acts of solidarity such as the production of masks and the delivery of meals in New Bedford, Massachusetts. And many of the professionals at the forefront fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, including doctors, nurses, police officers, and firefighters, are of Portuguese origin.
