FLAD is supporting two Summer Schools that will be held on the islands of Santa Maria and Terceira, in the Azores, during the month of July 2023. The Foundation will fund individual scholarships to PhD students from Mainland Portugal and the United States, which will cover air fares and accommodation throughout the period ofthe Summer School.

With the aim of contributing to the permanent updating of knowledge and training of the Azores’ scientific staff, as well as the contact and exchange of experiences between specialists from different scientific institutions and different regions, with a special focus on specialists with ties to the United States of America, FLAD is supporting two intensive summer courses to be held in July 2023 on Terceira Island and Santa Maria Island.

These two courses will contribute to advance knowledge in areas of interest relevant to the Autonomous Region of the Azores, and are supported by the Regional Government.

CIBIO-Az – Summer School on Marine Island (Palaeo)Biogeography

This intensive course is being organized by the Research Center for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO) Azores, and will take place between July 9 and 21 in Vila do Porto, Santa Maria Island, under the theme Marine Island (Palaeo)Biogeography.

During 13 days, participants will have the opportunity to observe in loco the results of more than 20 years of fieldwork in the oldest island of the Azores, with a vast program that includes lectures, symposia and fieldwork in extraordinarily geologically rich areas of the island and benefit from the experience of the invited specialists.

FLAD Support

FLAD will fund several scholarships for biodiversity students at the Universities of Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Aveiro and for students in the United States, which it will support:

  • Expenses with the hotel on the Island of Santa Maria in a double room;
  • Cost of the flight between mainland Portugal (Lisbon or Porto) and Santa Maria Island (students from Mainland Portugal);
  • Cost of the flight between Boston, USA, and Santa Maria Island, Azores (US students).

Biodiversity Group Azores – Summer School on Island Biogeography and Macroecology

Organized by the Azores Biodiversity Group – Center for Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Change, this Summer School will take place between July 17 and 28, in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island.

This course lasts for 70 hours, divided into two working weeks, in which participants will be given a comprehensive overview of different topics of biogeography and macroecology of the island, focusing on terrestrial ecosystems. The course will have a strong theoretical framework, using some of the most prestigious scientists in these areas, who will teach innovative methodologies for sampling on the ground and the necessary analytical tools.

Portuguese and USA PhD students are eligible for a grant from FLAD. The value of the scholarship will cover the following expenses:

  • Flights between Lisbon or Porto and Terceira Island, in economy class (Portuguese students);
  • Flights between Boston and Terceira Island in economy class (students from the United States);
  • 14 nights in a 3 star hotel or equivalent, in a double room, in Angra do Heroísmo.
