The new edition of the FLAD Visual Arts Course takes place in Arraiolos between September 20 and November 24, 2024. The advanced artistic training program is aimed at young artists between the ages of 25 and 35, who work in the areas of drawing, painting and installation/sculpture. Applications are open until April 15.

After the success of the first edition that took place on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, in 2022, and the second edition, in Loulé, FLAD’s Visual Arts Course arrives this year at the Cortéx Frontal space, in Arraiolos. For nine weeks, a group of up to eleven artists aged between 25 and 35 will have the opportunity to develop individual work tutored, with guest teachers who will provide training during each of the nine weeks of this Course.

The Course will take place between September 20 and November 24, 2024 and will be essentially practical, with a full-time workshop activity, accompanied by renowned teachers, who will have the function of stimulating critical thinking and individual imagination and collaborative work. At the end of the course, the artists will have the opportunity to present their work in an exhibition.

This initiative has Cortéx Frontal as its institutional partner and will take place at its facilities. Accommodation is included, as well as a production grant of €1000 per artist for the works to be produced in the context of the course.

In addition to the guest teachers, the Visual Arts Course also has the tutoring of the artist Catarina Botelho and an executive producer.

Who can apply?

Individual applications will be accepted according to the following requirements:

  • Portuguese nationality or a resident in Portugal for more than 5 years;
  • Age between 25 and 35 years;
  • Submit a letter of recommendation in .pdf (up to 1500 characters);
  • Submit a .pdf motivation letter (up to 1500 characters);
  • Submit an artistic biography with personal data, artistic training, exhibitions held (digital document in .pdf);
  • Provide a link to download a portfolio in .pdf with a maximum of 20 images of works in digital format;
  • Have full availability between September 20 and November 24, 2024 during weekdays in a period of 7 hours a day;

Selection

  • The jury will make an initial selection of up to 30 candidates;
  • Individual interviews with selected candidates;
  • Final selection up to 11 candidates.

The selected artists must sign a contract in which they state their intent to comply with the program and the schedule (no absences are allowed unless due to force-largeness).

As part of the course, there will also be a set of three mandatory sessions that will be open to the general public. The calendar of these lessons will be made known before the start of the course.
