FLAD is pleased to announce the expansion of the Study in Portugal Network (SiPN) programme to the city of Porto, marking an important milestone in the initiative’s national growth and further strengthening academic ties between Portugal and the United States.

SiPN formalized a new partnership with the University of Porto (U.Porto), expanding the academic presence of the program and reinforcing its role as a bridge between Portuguese and North American higher education institutions.

Through this collaboration, SiPN and U.Porto will develop semester, summer, and year-long study opportunities for U.S. students, allowing participants to enrol in regular university courses taught in English or Portuguese for local credit. The partnership also aims to progressively create experiential learning pathways, including research and curricular internship opportunities.

The expansion to Porto builds on more than a decade of impact. Since its launch in Lisbon through through partnerships with the University of Lisbon; the Catholic University of Portugal-Lisbon; ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon; and the Nova University of Lisbon (UNL), SIPN has welcomed more than 2,000 students from over 100 U.S. universities. The program has since expanded to include opportunities in Coimbra, Braga, Faro, among other locations, as well as summer programs at the University of the Azores, further advancing its mission to provide academically rigorous and culturally immersive experiences across Portugal.

“The expansion of SiPN to Porto represents an important step in FLAD’s commitment to the internationalisation of Portuguese higher education and to strengthening transatlantic academic relations,” said Michael Baum (FLAD Executive Board Member). “Porto offers a unique combination of academic excellence, innovation, and cultural identity, making it an outstanding destination for American students seeking meaningful global experiences.”

According to Ricardo Pereira (FLAD Education Director) the program’s growth reflects both the increasing interest in Portugal as a study abroad destination and the experience developed by the SiPN team over the years. “The know-how accumulated through more than a decade of program management has made it possible to expand SiPN in a thoughtful and sustainable way, while continuing to create purposeful connections between students, institutions, and local communities.”
