Following the diverse range of opportunities we already made available to promote the  research on the Portuguese Language and Culture, FLAD is launching a new set of grants available for those who want to to research in all Portuguese archives across the country.

The scholarships are open to professors and researchers affiliated with US universities or US research institutions based in the US, who wish to develop on-site research in Portuguese archives, regardless of their location and dimension in Portugal (continental or islands).

This new scholarship program is intended to strengthen FLAD’s commitment to the promotion, research and dissemination of documentation existing in municipal, regional or ministerial archives in Portugal, broadening opportunities already in place with the Torre de Tombo and the National Library of Portugal.

Who can apply?

  • The scholarship is addressed to researchers affiliated with a US-based university or research center, regardless of their nationality, who wish to conduct academic or professional research in any field that requires a on-site consultation of primary documents unavailable online.

How long are the scholarships?

  • The 2022 grants will run for periods ranging from one (1) to three (3) months and are due to begin until December 2022. Applications for shorter periods will not be considered.

Support

  • Researchers will be entitled to a roundtrip ticket USA to Portugal, up to €750,00 (seven hundred and fifty Euros), to be reimbursed upon receipt of proof of payment, as well as a monthly allowance of €1400,00 (one thousand and four hundred Euros), regardless of the location in Portugal.

Application

Applicants must submit the following documents in Portuguese:

  • Curriculum vitae of the candidate;
  • Description of the proposed study plan and how it intersects with the project in which it is integrated;
  • Document certifying the affiliation of the candidate with the university or research institution in the US;
  • Document of approval/invitation letter from the host Archive in Portugal.
    This document must contain the following information:
    – Approval of the research proposal agreeing with its relevance for the host Archive;
    – Confirmation of the requested dates for the research;
    – Confirmation that in person research is necessary for consulting the materials.
    – Recommendation letters which might be of interest for the assessment of the application.

Selection of candidates according to:

  • Scientific merit of the project;
  • Originality of the project;
  • Justification for the purpose of studying the referred documental collections;
  • Knowledge of the Portuguese language sufficient to read the proposed type of documentation;
  • Previous research carried out in Portugal.
