Scholarship for Portuguese students or residents in Portugal accepted at the University of California, Berkeley, to develop research as part of their doctoral studies.

With the objective of contributing to the development of the Portuguese scientific and academic community, FLAD in partnership with Center for Portuguese Studies/Institute for European Studies from University of California, Berkeley, awards a grant to Portuguese PhD students or residents in Portugal who want to do research to develop their PhD thesis at UC Berkeley.

Applicants must be PhD students in Portuguese universities and already accepted at the University of California, Berkeley, to develop their research.

Applications for the 2023/2024 academic year

  • The scholarship will benefit a Portuguese student or a student residing in Portugal, integrated in a PhD program at a Portuguese university;
  • All scientific fields are eligible;
  • This contest is for the 2023/2024 school year;
  • The length of stay at Berkeley may vary from a minimum of three months to a maximum of twelve months;
  • It is a condition that the candidate has been accepted at the University of California, Berkeley, to develop research within the scope of his doctoral work.

Grant Value

FLAD finances this program with a total amount of $10,000 allocated as follows:

  • 5,000 dollars will be provided directly by FLAD to the grantee;
  • 5,000 dollars will be paid directly by FLAD to the Center for Portuguese Studies/Institute for European Studies at the University of California, Berkeley and are intended to cover the costs of the initial visa process, access to the academic facilities and services of the University;
  • The grant value does not include health insurance, which must be obtained by the applicant before arriving in the US.

Documentation required:

Applicants must submit the following documents in English:

  • CV;
  • Brief biographical note on the candidate;
  • Description of the outlined study plan (3 p. max.);
  • Letter of motivation;
  • Letter of recommendation from the Portuguese institution to which the candidate is affiliated to;
  • Letter from the advisor at the University of California, Berkeley confirming acceptance as Visiting Researcher and the agreed upon period of time;
  • A budget of the stay and indication of other sources of funding and approved amounts;
  • Consent under the General Data Protection Regulation.

Deadlines:

  • The application period runs from January 20 to March 20, 2023;
  • The result will be communicated to the candidates via email address by April 20, 2023.
