Grant for Portuguese students accepted at the University of California, Berkeley,to conduct research for their Doctorate thesis.

In order to contribute to the development of the Portuguese scientific and academic community, the FLAD in partnership with the Centre for Portuguese Studies/Institute of European Studies of University of California, Berkeley, awards a scholarship to Portuguese doctoral students who want to do research to develop their doctoral thesis at UC Berkeley.

Applicants must be from Portuguese universities and already accepted at the University of California, Berkeley, to develop their research.

Applications for the academic year 2022/2023

  • The scholarship will benefit a student Portuguese part of a doctoral program at a Portuguese university;
  • All scientific fields are eligible;
  • This competition is for the school year 2022/2023;
  • The length of stay at Berkeley may vary from a minimum of three months to a maximum of twelve months;
  • It is a condition that the candidate has been accepted at the University of California, Berkeley, to develop research within the scope of his doctoral work.

Grant Value

FLAD finances this program with a total amount of $10,000, allocated as follows:

  • $5.000 will be made available directly by FLAD to the grantee;
  • $5,000 will be paid directly by FLAD to the Portuguese Studies Center/Institute of European Studies at the University of California, Berkeley and are intended to cover the charges for the initial visa process, access to the university’s academic structure and services;
  • The grant value does not include health insurance, which must be obtained by the applicant before arriving in the US.

Documentation required:

Applicants must submit the following documents in English:

  • CV;
  • Description of the outlined study plan (3 p. max.);
  • Motivation letter;
  • Letter of recommendation from the Portuguese institution to which the candidate is affiliated to;
  • Letter from the advisor of the University of California, Berkeley confirming the acceptance as Visiting Researcher and the agreed period for this purpose.

Deadlines:

  • The application period is open from January 19 until March 20, 2022.
  • The result will be communicated to applicants via email address by 19 April 2022.

Within 90 days after the conclusion of the grant period, a report shall be sent to FLAD.
