Applications are open to the FLAD/Pinto-Fialon Grant, a partnership between the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) and the Center for Portuguese Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, which will award a scholarship to doctoral or master’s students who have been accepted at University of California, Berkeley. Applications will be open until November 25, 2023.

The partnership between FLAD and the Center for Portuguese Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, is a unique opportunity to support students who want to pursue their studies at one of the world’s best universities.

In this year’s edition, the Fellowship will be awarded to a PhD student who will be eligible for financial support of up to $60,000, spread over the five years of the PhD period, or a Master’s student who will receive up to a total of $26,000 over the two years of their study program.

To be eligible for this support, it is an essential condition that applicants have been accepted by the University of California, Berkeley into the respective programs. This grant will be awarded to Portuguese students, residing in Portugal for at least 5 years.

Are eligible students from all scientific fields.

Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Portuguese ID;
  • CV;
  • Description of the intended study plan (maximum 3 pages);
  • Letter of motivation;
  • Document proving the acceptance and registration at the University of California, Berkeley;
  • Consent under the General Data Protection Regulation.

Calendar:

  • Applications open from May 25 to November 25;
  • The result of the selection will be communicated to the candidates, through an e-mail address, taking into account the order in which the applications arrive;
  • A progress report shall be sent to FLAD within 90 days after the conclusion of the first academic year at UC-Berkeley.

Applications to UC-Berkeley require not only excellent academic requirements, but also rigorous preparation for the application process, documentation and its formats (resume, cover letter, letters of reference, etc.), as well as careful attention to deadlines.

Standard timeline and application processes to apply for a Master’s or PhD at UC-Berkeley usually run May through December of the academic year prior to the expected year of attendance. However, specific information regarding the graduate application process and respective timeline is found on each of UC-Berkeley’s department’s websites.

FLAD highly recommends prospective UC-Berkeley applicants to participate in Fulbright Portugal’s Pathway to Graduate School. This program, that is free of charge to participants, will guide and assist interested Portuguese students that wish to apply for a Masters or PhD program at a US university.
