Applications are now open for the selection of Visiting Professor in the fields of History, Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology or Economics for the spring semester 2024.

The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) and Saab Center for Portuguese Studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell – College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, has launched the second edition of Visiting Professor at the Saab Center for Portuguese Studies at UMass Lowell – Portuguese Studies, during the Spring semester 2024. The open call is open to Portuguese academics teaching in higher education institutions in Portugal or abroad.

The program is the result of a partnership between FLAD, the Saab Center for Portuguese Studies, and the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at UMass Lowell. The goal is to contribute to the curriculum of that faculty by strengthening the Portuguese scholarly perspective and, more specifically, to support the Portuguese Studies Program at UMass Lowell, and the mission of the Saab Center for Portuguese Studies. On a broader dimension, this program aims to strengthen the University’s relationship with the Portuguese-American community present in the region.

For the second year of the program, which will run in the spring 2024 semester, we are looking for a professor in the academic areas of History, Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology or Economics. The Visiting Professor will teach up to two courses in English and give one or more public lectures in his or her area of expertise. The scholarship covers the salary for one semester.

Cristiana Bastos (ICS-Ulisboa) was the first FLAD/Saab Visiting Professor in Portuguese Studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and is currently teaching “Epidemics in History” at the Department of History.
