Michael Rodrigues, Portuguese-American and Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee – equivalent to our budget committee – of the Massachusetts Senate, talks about the work that has been done to help the community during this crisis.

Responsible for drafting and approving the Massachusetts Commonwealth budget, the Committee on Ways and Means is one of the most powerful committees from a legislative body. As in the other states (and countries), much of the work of this committee has become the creation of emergency legislation to respond to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy. Michael Rodrigues is working on this legislation, which includes changes to the rules for awarding unemployment benefits and legislation to prevent the eviction of people affected by the crisis.
