Applications are now open for the next Summer Course at the University of Azores. The event will take place at the Campus of Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira island, from July 22th to August 2nd 2024.

It will be a comprehensive course (70 hours, 6ECTS) offering an overview of different island’s biogeography and macroecological topics, focused on terrestrial ecosystems.

It offers a strong theoretical background, presented by some of the most prestigious scientists in the field, that will provide innovative methodologies regarding field sampling and analytical tools.

During the two-week course the students will follow the steps of a scientific project to get the best research questions, objectives and hypotheses, using the appropriate selection of methods, including collection, analysis and discussion of data/results.

The course is focused on the large-scale patterns of taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity.

This course is funded by the Regional Directorate of Science and Technology of the Regional Government of the Azores and by the Luso-American Development Foundation.

  • Applications are open until April 7, 2024;
  • Recipients: PhD and MSc students in the fields of ecology, geography, and related areas; Postdocs who develop work on related topics;

Financial support

Portuguese and American students are eligible for a FLAD scholarship. The value of the scholarship will cover the following expenses:

  • Flights between Lisbon or Porto and Terceira Island, in economy class (Portuguese students);
  • Flights between Boston and Terceira Island in economy class (students from the United States);
  • 14 nights in a 3 star hotel or equivalent, in a double room, in Angra do Heroísmo.
