Professors Tiago Antunes and Ana Espírito-Santo will be the next visiting professors at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The two Portuguese academics will have the opportunity to teach for one semester each at one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
The competition for Visiting Professor at Georgetown University is a joint initiative of FLAD and the Department of Government of Georgetown University, which annually allows one or two Portuguese Professors the unique opportunity to teach at one of the most reputable institutions of higher education in the United States, and a world reference in the areas of Political Science and International Relations. Those selected will be able to benefit from the University’s resources, developing partnerships and its international curriculum.
For the academic year 2025/2026, the jury composed of the President of FLAD, Nuno Morais Sarmento, Pedro Magalhães, Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon and Lívia Franco, Professor at the Institute of Political Studies of the Catholic University of Portugal, selected:
Tiago Antunes is a Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and a Researcher at the Lisbon Public Law Research Centre (LPL). He is also a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe and an Associate Senior Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations.As an academic, Tiago Antunes has published extensively, with a special focus on Environmental Law, Administrative Law, Constitutional Law and European Union Law. His research on European matters focuses on topics such as defence policy, enlargement, institutional reform and the rule of law.
In the fall semester of 2025, he will teach the subject Past, Present and Future of European Integration. This course provides an overview of the European integration process, covering past circumstances, current characteristics and future developments. The course focuses not only on the evolution of the European project, delving into the reasons for its birth and the transformations it has undergone over time, but also on its enlargement.

Ana Espírito-Santo (PhD from the European University Institute, 2011) is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon (IUL) and a researcher at CIES-Iscte. Her main research interests are gender and politics, political representation and comparative politics. His research has been published in journals such as West European Politics, Electoral Studies and Party Politics.
During the spring semester of 2026 she will teach the subject Political Attitudes and Behaviors. The aim is to explore the most important political attitudes and behaviours. The course is structured in two parts: the first part presents a comprehensive overview of political behavior and addresses topics such as electoral participation, electoral behavior, and political participation beyond voting; The second part focuses on political attitudes and includes topics such as political interest, satisfaction with democracy and political sophistication. The close relationship between political attitudes and political behaviors will also be the subject of reflection throughout the course.
