“Os Primos da América” is FLAD’s new podcast, created in partnership with RDP Internacional and Mensagem de Lisboa, as part of the celebrations of the Foundation’s 40th anniversary.
Based on the book of the same name by journalist Ferreira Fernandes, this series delves into the real stories of Portuguese people who, through the sea and its islands, have established fruitful connections with the United States.
In this project we revive these memories, some already forgotten, and which travel through several American states, from New England to California, passing through Illinois and Hawaii.
The stories of António Joaquim Lopes – the first whaler to arrive in Hawaii – and the history of the Portuguese in the archipelago – will be told. Cabrilho, the first European in California; Charlotte Rodrigues: Mary Todd Lincoln’s seamstress and the case of the Portuguese Protestants, among many others.
The first episode is now available!
Meet António Joaquim Lopes. From a young whaler to a community founder, this Portuguese jumps ashore in Hawaii, marries, has children, opens a business and helps other emigrants, exchanging the sea for a new life on dry land.
Available on RTP Play and the usual podcast platforms.
