All the teenagers in the town of Haley dress up for what is called “the most important day of their lives…”. Young people walk through the city with reluctance and skepticism, attracted by an unknown destination, where a strange rite of passage to adulthood awaits them. The film features a vast cast of more than one hundred actors, including non-professionals, in order to explore the relationship of a suburban community with the ritual of a prom and the decay of a certain vision of humanity. It starts with the popular spirit of John Hughes’ films and gradually turns into a peculiar dystopia with the energy that characterizes Richard Linklater. Ham On Rye was the auspicious debut of one of the most original young contemporary directors.
