After losing his position as a legal assistant, Sam Stein has a panic attack and ends up accepting a job as a baby-sitter to his psychiatrist´s three granddaughters. The girls´ mother Dianne, is an actress whose once promising career has stagnated, and her marriage to David, a bass player, is going through a rough patch. When David goes abroad on tour, Dianne and Sam discover a natural affinity, as well as a common history of mental illnesses. Sam joins Dianne´s family to watch the children during the summer at Martha’s Vineyard, and things don´t go as planned. Besides directing an excellent cast, Matthew Shear gives Amanda Peet her best role to date in this admirably well-constructed romantic comedy.
