{"id":96964,"date":"2021-06-25T00:52:05","date_gmt":"2021-06-25T00:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/?p=96964"},"modified":"2021-06-28T18:14:24","modified_gmt":"2021-06-28T17:14:24","slug":"azss-azores-summer-school-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/azss-azores-summer-school-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"AzSS \u2013 Azores Summer School 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column column_width_use_pixel=&#8221;yes&#8221; gutter_size=&#8221;3&#8243; overlay_alpha=&#8221;50&#8243; shift_x=&#8221;0&#8243; shift_y=&#8221;0&#8243; shift_y_down=&#8221;0&#8243; z_index=&#8221;0&#8243; medium_width=&#8221;0&#8243; mobile_width=&#8221;0&#8243; column_width_pixel=&#8221;800&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"Main__content\">\n<h3 class=\"Main__content\">The first edition of AzSS \u2013 Azores Summer School will take place in<strong> Vila do Porto, Santa Maria Island, Azores<\/strong>, from <strong>August 6th to 19th, 2021<\/strong>, with the organization of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cibio.uac.pt\/en\">CIBIO-InBIO\/Azores<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.azores.gov.pt\/\">Regional Government of Azores<\/a>,<\/strong> on <strong>Marine Island (Palaeo)Biogeography.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"Main__content\">This multidisciplinary summer course will be led by a panel of experts who will address several topics, such as:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Main__content\">\n<div class=\"Main__content\">\n<ul>\n<li>Geological evolution of islands;<\/li>\n<li>Study of past organisms and environments;<\/li>\n<li>Statistical analyses of collected data;<\/li>\n<li>Evolutionary processes and patterns;<\/li>\n<li>Historical and contemporary forces shaping the marine biodiversity in remote volcanic and oceanic archipelagos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For <strong>12 days,<\/strong> participants will be able to experience one of the oldest islands in the Azores, but also discuss the results of the research work on these themes in Santa Maria Island, either through <strong>lectures, conferences, or field trips.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The main objective of AzSS is to equip participants with <strong>exceptional tools<\/strong> from various research areas that, together, <strong>allow a clearer interpretation of marine biogeographic processes and patterns in these island systems.<\/strong> Another major objective of this course is to foster contact between Portuguese and North-American researchers, but also to promote scientific knowledge of the Autonomous Region of the Azores and its projection in the framework of European and international research.<\/p>\n<p>The course will be open to a maximum of <strong>35 participants.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Candidate Profile<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Research interests in Insular Ecosystems are mandatory.<\/li>\n<li>A background in Biogeography is recommended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>FLAD&#8217;s Grants<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\"><strong>15 scholarships<\/strong> for PhD students from Portuguese institutions. All expenses are included (accommodation at the Santa Maria Hotel and flight from Mainland Portugal \u2013 Lisbon or Porto \u2013 to Santa Maria Island).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\"><strong>6 scholarships<\/strong> for US students.
