{"id":96307,"date":"2021-05-20T14:38:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-20T14:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/36-years-betting-on-the-future\/"},"modified":"2021-05-20T15:34:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T15:34:44","slug":"36-years-investing-in-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/36-years-investing-in-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"36 years investing in the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>36 years ago, FLAD was created with a fundamental mission: to promote the connection between Portugal and the United States and, thus, to contribute to the development of Portugal.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>There have been more than three decades of several projects and initiatives, but today we want to focus on the future<\/strong>. In promoting debate, in the development of the Portuguese and the Portuguese-Americans, in partnership with institutions on both sides of the Atlantic, focused on our four priority areas: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/science-and-technology\/\">Science<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/education\/\">Education<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/art-and-culture\/\">Art and Culture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/transatlantic-relations\/\">Transatlantic Relations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, this pandemic is challenging for everyone. But in between adapting to working from home\u00a0and zoom\u00a0meetings, <strong>we have always remained active and\u00a0with the same goal: to do more, to do better.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We continued to work on the programs that were already ongoing, <\/strong>we made sure that our grant holders didn&#8217;t miss the opportunities they deservedly earned, but we also launched new projects. This was the case of FLAD&#8217;s Science Awards \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/flad-science-award-mental-health-2nd-phase\/\">Mental Health<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/flad-science-award-atlantic-2021-2nd-phase\/\">Atlantic<\/a> \u2013, of the exhibition of FLAD&#8217;s art collection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/fff\">Feast. Fury. Femina.<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/flads-open-call-for-translation-of-books\/\">FLAD&#8217;s program for book translations<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/atlantic-talks-podcasts\/\">Atlantic Talks podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We are also preparing new initiatives <\/strong>such as FLAD&#8217;s Drawing Award, the Visual Arts Course in the Arquip\u00e9lago (in S\u00e3o Miguel), FLAD&#8217;s Science Award Junior, and the Summer Schools in the Azores in the most relevant technological areas for the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In these last few months, we\u00a0also invested\u00a0even more in social responsibility,\u00a0<\/strong>aware of the difficulties in which so many live and the growing needs in this very difficult period. As a private foundation, we believe that FLAD has to be aware of the situation in Portugal and move forward to respond in circumstances like these. Thus, in 2020 we supported the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/covid-19-flad-donates-350-thousand-euros-to-the-rede-de-emergencia-alimentar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/acores.caritas.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C\u00e1ritas Azores<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/casa-apoioaosemabrigo.org\/index.php\/delegacoes\/casa-porto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CASA in Porto<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/flad-supports-the-creation-of-biobank-to-study-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scientific research linked to the fight against COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is a path that we will continue to take this year, because we believe in the importance of our intervention.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>We will support organizations from very different fields,<\/strong>\u00a0with contributions ranging from clothing, food, and appliances to foster homes for children and young people, to a van to distribute food baskets, adopt a victim support room or assign driving licenses to merit students with financial needs.\u00a0<strong>Very soon we will have news on the work of these organizations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In addition to being on the side of the most vulnerable, it is also up to us to continue motivating young Portuguese students, artists, and scientists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/opportunities-flad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to go research and study in the USA. <\/a><\/strong><strong>This pandemic imposed postponements, but our goals remain the same.<\/strong>\u00a0Today, we are also better prepared to meet American students who want to come to Portugal to study through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studyinportugalnetwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SiPN<\/a>, and every day we strengthen our bond with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/portuguese-american-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portuguese-American community.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We are counting on you and, soon, we hope to be able to open the doors of the Foundation to receive you!<\/p>\n<p>Rita Faden<\/p>\n<p>FLAD&#8217;s President<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today we celebrate 36 years of work for Portugal, the Portuguese and Portuguese-Americans.
