In this week’s edition of the Observador Newsletter \u2013 Until the White House, journalist Jo\u00e3o Francisco Gomes analyzes the symbolic importance of the inauguration and the oath of office for the presidential transition and the democratic process in the United States.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Since the first inauguration of a president, George Washington in New York (when there was no Washington D.C.), these moments have been harnessed by the symbolic importance they have. It is at the inauguration that the new president announces his vision for the country, where he fosters unity (or division), with a conciliatory or combative tone.<\/p>\n

This Wednesday, it will be different by the context of the pandemic, by the attack on the capitol, but not in the political and symbolic importance of the moment. Joe Biden is expected to move forward with a conciliatory and explanatory speech on his priorities.<\/p>\n
