FLAD and the University of California, Berkeley,<\/a> have signed a protocol that will ensure the promotion of Portugal and the Portuguese academic community within one of the best universities in the world. <\/strong><\/h3>\n

The agreement between FLAD<\/a> and the University of California, Berkeley, <\/a>provides a three-year funding program for the Center of Portuguese Studies, <\/a>which is part of the Institute of European Studies<\/a> of the prestigious North-American university.<\/p>\n

This will allow the financing of the first year of doctorate Portuguese students who have been accepted and have enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley.<\/a> FLAD<\/a> will contribute with 20.000 euros<\/strong> for each of these grants, a value that will be matched by the Pinto-Fialon Fund.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Pinto-Fialon Fund<\/a> was created following the decision of the Portuguese immigrant in the USA, Arthur Ferreira Pinto, to donate \u2013 together with his wife, Annette Fialon \u2013 his assets to UC Berkeley<\/a> in order to\u00a0support Portuguese students who decide to study at this university. Arthur Pinto, originally from Aveiro, emigrated to the U.S. in 1920, having graduated in 1942, at the age of 40, in Chemistry at UC Berkeley.<\/a><\/p>\n

Another opportunity foreseen in this agreement will allow to award a grant of $10.000<\/strong> so that a Portuguese Junior Visiting Researcher can conduct research for his doctoral thesis at UC Berkeley<\/a> for a period of between 3 to 12 months.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Promote Portugal and the Portuguese community in one of the best universities in the world<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The agreement reached between FLAD<\/a> and UC Berkeley<\/a> will allow a wide range of initiatives that will be essential to promote Portugal within that University, but also the Portuguese community, the teaching of Portuguese, and even Portugal as a destination for Berkeley<\/a> students.<\/p>\n

Among others, it is planned to:<\/strong><\/p>\n
