The mission represents a milestone in ocean observation, demonstrating the ability of an autonomous, sustainable and long-endurance vehicle to operate in the Atlantic and collect scientific data in a real environment. <\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The project is led by <strong>Renato Mendes<\/strong>, researcher at <strong>INEGI \u2013 Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management<\/strong> and winner of the <strong>FLAD Science Award Atlantic 2021<\/strong>, a distinction awarded by FLAD to support innovative scientific projects dedicated to the knowledge of the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">FLAD&#8217;s support allowed us to boost an ambitious initiative that combines engineering, maritime robotics, oceanography and remote operation, culminating in this demonstration of an autonomous and sustainable crossing between mainland Portugal and the Azores. The project also involves <strong>+ATLANTIC CoLAB<\/strong>, the <strong>Laboratory of Underwater Systems and Technologies (LSTS)<\/strong> of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and <strong>Professor Pierre Lermusiaux<\/strong>, from the <strong>Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).<\/strong> <\/p>\n<h2>A mission to get to know the Atlantic better<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">At this moment, Caravel has already completed about <strong>30% of the planned route<\/strong>, validating the platform&#8217;s ability to operate for long periods in an oceanic environment. The mission will test, in real conditions, the vehicle&#8217;s autonomy, communication and remote monitoring systems, as well as the continuous collection of scientific data. <\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Powered by wave energy and supported by solar panels, Caravel carries out extended missions without resorting to fossil fuels, providing a sustainable solution for ocean observation, particularly in remote or hard-to-reach areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Along the crossing, the vehicle will collect information on ocean phenomena of high scientific relevance, such as ocean fronts, small-scale vortices, floating debris accumulation zones and other processes that are difficult to monitor through traditional campaigns.<\/p>\n<h2>Science, innovation and international cooperation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The mission benefits from the experience gained in a previous attempt, carried out in 2025, which made it possible to identify and correct a technical limitation related to a hardware component. The knowledge obtained reinforced the robustness of the platform and contributed to preparing this new crossing in better technical and scientific conditions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The JUNO project is part of the vision of the <strong>United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development<\/strong>, promoting the collection and sharing of essential scientific data to understand phenomena associated with climate change, marine pollution, ocean ecosystems and the sustainable management of sea resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">More than an autonomous crossing, this mission demonstrates the potential of a new generation of ocean observation platforms, capable of complementing traditional research methods and strengthening Portugal&#8217;s scientific and technological capacity as an Atlantic country.<\/p>\n<h2>Tracking the mission<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The evolution of the crossing can be followed in real time through the <a href=\"https:\/\/ripples.lsts.pt\"><strong>Ripples<\/strong><\/a> platform, where it is possible to consult the current position of Caravel. The main milestones of the mission will also be announced through the <strong>+ATLANTIC CoLAB<\/strong> LinkedIn page. <\/p>\n<h2>Partners<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The JUNO project brings together a wide range of national and international partners, including <strong>INEGI,<\/strong> <strong>+ATLANTIC CoLAB<\/strong>, the <strong>Laboratory of Underwater Systems and Technologies (LSTS)<\/strong> of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, the <strong>Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),<\/strong> the <strong>Portuguese Navy<\/strong>, the <strong>Hydrographic Institute<\/strong>, <strong>APDL \u2013 Administration of the Ports of Douro, Leix\u00f5es and Viana do Castelo<\/strong>,  <strong>NTNU \u2013 Norwegian University of Science and Technology<\/strong>, the <strong>Portuguese Space Agency<\/strong>, <strong>EMSO-PT<\/strong>, the <strong>Naval Club of Le\u00e7a<\/strong>, the <strong>Atlantic Sailing Club<\/strong>, the              <strong>BBDouro<\/strong>, the <strong>Porto Atl\u00e2ntico Marina<\/strong>, <strong>AutoNaut-Seiche<\/strong>, the <strong>Azores School of the Sea<\/strong> and <strong>OKEANOS \u2013 Institute for Research in Marine Sciences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By supporting this project, FLAD reaffirms its commitment to promoting scientific excellence, technological innovation and knowledge of
