{"id":109150,"date":"2024-09-09T15:43:38","date_gmt":"2024-09-09T14:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/flad-science-award-atlantic-2024-2nd-phase\/"},"modified":"2024-09-09T15:43:38","modified_gmt":"2024-09-09T14:43:38","slug":"flad-science-award-atlantic-2024-2nd-phase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/en\/flad-science-award-atlantic-2024-2nd-phase\/","title":{"rendered":"FLAD Science Award Atlantic 2024 \u2013 2nd Phase"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Candidates who were selected in the 1st phase can now complete their application for the largest research award focused on the Atlantic in Portugal, extended to Social Sciences and Humanities. <\/strong><strong>See below how to apply for the 2nd phase.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>What&#8217;s our goal? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>  Within the scope of the strong commitment to Science and Technology that characterizes FLAD, it is important that this research is able to develop practical results, such as the creation of strategies, engineering and technologies, that facilitate our understanding and sustainable exploration of Atlantic ecosystems. FLAD wants to support and distinguish young scholars, thus promoting the new and promising generation of researchers that we have in Portugal, in close collaboration with the main research centers in the USA.  <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key areas of research<\/strong> <b>for the 2024 edition<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>  The award is open to the study areas of <strong>engineering\/technology<\/strong> and <strong>environment\/natural sciences<\/strong>, <strong>social sciences and humanities<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Science and technology to promote a healthy and clean ocean, addressing the Atlantic as a natural ecosystem asset;<\/li>\n<li>Future impact of climate change on human populations in Atlantic coastal regions and design of mitigation or adaptation actions, including citizen participation;<\/li>\n<li>Assess the value of the Atlantic in natural assets and ecosystems, in particular in its contribution to the Blue Economy, using advanced economic analyses and big data;<\/li>\n<li>Environmental and energy transition strategies for islands and isolated areas;<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable mobility and logistics, in the context of growing digital transformation;<\/li>\n<li>New approaches in the planning, observation and management of the Atlantic area, including the preservation of critical ecosystems, making use of observation methods involving low-cost satellite systems, advanced sensor systems, artificial intelligence or data science;<\/li>\n<li>Production of new technologies such as underwater robotics, unmanned shipping, acoustic communications, sensors and data analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Jury<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>  The evaluation is made by a jury of excellence composed of four elements:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Miguel Miranda<\/strong>, Full Professor at <a href=\"https:\/\/ciencias.ulisboa.pt\/\">Faculdade de Ci\u00eancias, Universidade de Lisboa<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pedro Camanho<\/strong>, Full Professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sigarra.up.pt\/feup\/pt\/web_page.inicial\">Faculdade de Engenharia, Universidade do Porto,<\/a>and president of <a class=\"cursor-init\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dem.ist.utl.pt\/idmec\/laeta\/\">LAETA.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rui Ferreira dos Santos<\/strong>, Professor at <a class=\"cursor-init\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cense.fct.unl.pt\/\">CENSE &#8211; Center for Research in Environment and Sustainability<\/a>, <a class=\"cursor-init\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fct.unl.pt\/\">Faculdade de Ci\u00eancias e Tecnologia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Elsa Henriques,<\/strong> Associate Professor at <a class=\"cursor-init\" href=\"https:\/\/tecnico.ulisboa.pt\/pt\/\">Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico, University of Lisbon,<\/a>and member of the Executive Board of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flad.pt\/\">FLAD.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>  Candidates selected for the 2nd phase of the FLAD Science Award Atlantic will have <strong>between September 13 and October 13, 2024 <\/strong>to complete their application.
