Next Wednesday, October 25th<\/sup>, the Luso American Development Foundation (FLAD) will organize a ZOOM session to present the groundbreaking <\/strong>study \u2018Portuguese immigrants and descendants in the USA in the 21st<\/sup> century\u2019<\/em>, a profile of the around 1.3 million Portuguese descendants living in the United States.<\/h3>\n

This online session, in partnership with the Consulate General of Portugal in San Francisco and the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute at Fresno State, will take place on October 25th, at 11:00 a.m. (Pacific Time), and follows the in-person presentations in Washington, New York, and Massachusetts, in June. The session is open to all who wish to participate.<\/p>\n

The Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco, Pedro Perestrelo Pinto, and FLAD\u2019s president, Rita Faden, will deliver opening remarks. The study will then be presented by two of its authors, Alda Botelho Azevedo and Lara P. Tavares, from the University of Lisbon. The floor will then be open to the audience to hear from the participants and discuss the challenges ahead.<\/p>\n

A more spread out and highly educated Portuguese American Community <\/u><\/em><\/p>\n

This study was commissioned by FLAD to increase the knowledge on the demographic and socioeconomic profile of the Portuguese American community in the United States, and better target the initiatives to strengthen the Portuguese American community and bring the diaspora closer to Portugal.<\/p>\n

Results show 1.3 million Portuguese descendants identifying as having Portuguese ancestry. This community is made up mainly of generations who were not born in Portugal, a community that is fully integrated in the American society and present in the different sectors of activity in the US. The number of Portuguese descendants who speak Portuguese is growing and this group has some specific characteristics that are worth discussing.<\/p>\n

While the largest population of Portuguese immigrants and descendants continues to live in New England, results show a growing population of Portuguese ancestry are establishing in less traditional states such as Florida, Texas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.<\/p>\n
