On June 15, at 6:30 p.m., FLAD, in partnership with Clube do Autor, will host Robert D. Kaplan, one of the most prestigious thinkers on post-Cold War international relations and author of 21 books, including ‘A Vingan\u00e7a da Geografia’ (Clube do Autor), for the conference Democracy<\/em> The Way Ahead: The New Geopolitics: Our World in Permanent Crisis<\/em>. <\/em>This conversation will be moderated by Professor and commentator, Miguel Monjardino.<\/h3>\n

The rise of China, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and the changes in the Middle East highlight a new paradigm for geopolitics: that of a world in permanent crisis. The changing balance of power between the great powers has led to significant changes in the world order, the restructuring of alliances and, consequently, new conflicts. In order to better understand the challenges ahead, FLAD is organizing a conversation with two leading specialists in international relations.<\/p>\n

The Conference Democracy The Way Ahead: The New Geopolitics: Our World in Permanent Crisis<\/em> will address the geopolitical situation from a historical and geographical perspective, the challenges inherent in democracy and the power of the United States in today’s world, as well as how it exercises it, and, consequently, the implications for the post-Cold War world order.<\/p>\n

Robert D. Kaplan was born in 1952 in New York City. Journalist, political analyst, traveler, and writer, he is the author of more than a dozen works on geopolitical issues and international themes, translated into several languages. Among them is ‘A Vingan\u00e7a da Geografia’, published in Portugal by Clube do Autor. He collaborates with several specialized media and was an international correspondent. He has been writing for The Atlantic magazine for over three decades and is senior fellow at the New American Security Center.<\/p>\n

He was a professor at the United States Naval Academy and an advisor to the United States Department of Defense. He has twice been named one of the “Top 100 Global Thinkers” by Foreign Policy.<\/p>\n

Miguel Monjardino is Visiting Professor of Geopolitics and Geostrategy at Instituto de Estudos Pol\u00edticos at Universidade Cat\u00f3lica Portuguesa and international politics columnist for the Expresso newspaper. He has been a political-military analyst for SIC-Not\u00edcias since 2001. He studied Law at Universidade de Lisboa, followed by degrees in International Security and Strategic Studies at Reading and Birmingham Universities in England. He was a Visiting Researcher at the University of Maryland at College Park. He is the author of the book ‘Por Onde Ir\u00e1 a Hist\u00f3ria’ (Clube do Autor).<\/p>\n

The cycle Democracy: The Way Ahead<\/em> is an initiative by FLAD that aims to promote a space for reflection and debate on the current problems facing the world and, using international experts, to seek solutions for the coming decades. John Ikenberry, Professor at Princeton University, and Constanze Stelzenm\u00fcller, Director at the Brookings Institution, and the journalists Peter Baker (New York Times) and Susan Glasser (New Yorker) have already been speakers to the event.<\/p>\n

The session will take place on June 15, at 6:30pm<\/span>, in FLAD’s auditorium<\/span> in Lisbon.<\/p>\n
